The Alumni Scholarship
Endowment fund-raising effort commenced in earnest in 1999. With
assistance from a Scholarship Committee, loyal alumni/ae and local
businesses that supported the effort through their gifts and
pledges,
EHSAA reached its initial
goal of $100,000. Although many gifts were in the form of pledges
with little time to accumulate income for the June 2000 awards, the
Association was pleased to award the first scholarships that year.
Awards totaling $3,000 were announced and presented to three
graduating seniors and two alumni/ae then enrolled in college.
Since then several scholarships have been awarded each June.
A committee consisting of
two members of the EHSAA Board of Directors and three former high school
teachers selects scholarship awardees. Award criteria
include: diploma or GED graduate or student in good standing
anticipating graduation from EHS, who is a resident of Maine, and is
either currently enrolled or has been accepted in an associate,
bachelors, masters or Ph.D. degree program. Awards may be based on
academic merit, other outstanding qualifications, or financial need. An
essay detailing personal goals and aspirations must accompany the
application. Applications are available at Ellsworth High School at the
beginning of each calendar year.
With continued financial
support from Ellsworth High School Alumni/ae and the community, we can
reach our goal of a $1,000,000 endowment. If you have not yet made a
commitment to this program, please consider doing so. No gift is too
small or too large. If you are not in a position to make a gift at this
time, you might consider providing for the Ellsworth High School Alumni
Endowment through a bequest. If you wish additional information on how
to accomplish the latter, please contact Janet Rourke c/o EHSAA – PO Box
11 – Ellsworth, ME 04605. Other inquiries may be addressed to
Malen Hsu, c/o EHSAA, or email
mhsu@roadrunner.com.
Gifts and pledges may be
